Yesterday I searched for a new cradle for my pocket pc (Asus A636N) and I found that Alternate, where I wanted to by the cradle, offers free sms for their customers. The customers of Alternate are able to send 10 messages monthly for free. There are “only” 140 characters and not full 160 as at “Free SMS” from Zelfi or GMX and you are not able to setup your own cell phone number as sender-number, but it works fine.
